French Ridge Hut

French Ridge Hut is a serviced 20-bunk alpine hut in tussock at about 1,480 m, just below the snowline in the upper Matukituki Valley. It’s an overnight base for climbs of Mount Aspiring, with a wide panorama from the hut. Getting here is a serious trip for fit, experienced trampers: 16.2 km one way from Raspberry Creek, with 6–7.5 hours on foot.

Raspberry Creek car park is 54 km west of Wānaka along Wānaka–Mount Aspiring Road. The final 30 km is gravel, and several fords in the last 10 km can become impassable in heavy rain. From the road end, Aspiring Hut is about 9 km and 2–2.5 hours in; French Ridge Hut is a further 7.2 km and 4–5 hours. An overnight at Aspiring Hut can split the approach.

The final climb from Pearl Flat is the crux: a steep, often slippery push through bush over roots and rock slabs, where you may need your hands. The narrower subalpine track then eases into about a kilometre of tussock. The steep section gains more than 900 m in roughly 2 km.

Dry summer and early autumn are the preferred conditions. The ridge is exposed and the weather can change quickly; snow and ice can turn winter and some shoulder-season trips into mountaineering. Avalanche terrain is a concern, usually from May through November, and those conditions can require an ice axe, crampons and avalanche-rescue gear. Dogs aren’t allowed on the track.

The hut has bunks, mattresses and lighting, plus a non-flush toilet and untreated tap water that needs boiling. Bring a sleeping bag, stove and fuel, cookware, food, toilet paper, a torch and a bag for your rubbish; no food service is listed. Bookings are required year-round, and Backcountry Hut Passes and tickets aren’t accepted.

The panorama looks across Gloomy Gorge to Rob Roy and the west face of Avalanche, then sweeps around Hector Col, Mount Barff, Mount Liverpool and Cascade Saddle. Kea have been seen around the hut, though they’re never guaranteed.
