Liverpool Hut

Liverpool Hut is a serviced 10-bunk alpine hut perched on a knoll above the Matukituki Valley, with views toward Mount Aspiring/Tititea. Choose it as an overnight backcountry goal if you're an experienced tramper and comfortable with steep, exposed ground. There is no track beyond the hut, so this is a destination, not a through route. Raspberry Creek car park is about 54 km (around 1 hour 20 minutes) from Wānaka, with the last 30 km on gravel. From there, allow about 6½ hours each way for the 15 km walk.

From Raspberry Creek car park, the West Matukituki Track crosses open valley flats to Aspiring Hut, then follows bush and open terraces to Pearl Flat. After a swing bridge over Liverpool Stream, the final kilometre climbs steeply through slippery ground to an exposed rock slab beside a steep drop, then continues over shingle, rock and tussock to the knoll. Follow the poles and don't sidle below the knoll.

This is an advanced track suited to experienced trampers. Wet or icy conditions make the rock slab treacherous, and alpine weather changes quickly. Aim for dry summer or early-autumn conditions; avalanche terrain can be hazardous from late autumn into early summer.

The hut has mattresses, a non-flush toilet and tap water that must be boiled. Bring a sleeping bag, stove and fuel, pots and utensils, toilet paper, a rubbish bag and a torch. Reservations are required from Labour Weekend through 30 April, so book ahead during that period. Dogs aren't allowed on the track.

The hut stands above the Matukituki Valley with Mount Aspiring/Tititea in view. For a photo that shows its setting, frame the red building against the open valley and mountain backdrop. Visitors often report kea around the hut, sometimes investigating food or gear left outside, so keep your kit close.
