Alta Vista Loop is the quintessential quick-hit in Paradise: a short, steep loop that trades a modest climb for big, in-your-face views of Mount Rainier and rolling alpine meadows. It starts right from the main Paradise area, so you’re on scenery almost immediately.

What You’ll See

Expect panoramic looks at Rainier’s glaciers, surrounding ridges, and the lush Paradise meadows. In July–August, the loop often bursts with lupine, paintbrush, avalanche lilies, and more. Marmots and deer are commonly spotted along the way, and there are a few benches up high where you can sit and soak up the view.

Crowd Factor and Trail Feel

Paradise is almost always busy—especially on summer weekends and during peak bloom—so the loop sees a lot of traffic. The climb is short but punchy, and early season snow can linger, making sections slippery. In winter, this area is also popular for snowshoeing, offering a quieter, wintry take on the same vistas.

Link it up: Use the signed junctions to stitch Alta Vista into a longer wander through Paradise meadows or pair it with nearby viewpoints.
Protect the meadows: Stay on the designated paths—off‑trail shortcuts damage fragile plants and are strictly discouraged.
Facilities: You’ll find parking, a visitor center, and other services at Paradise, just not on the loop itself.

Crowds: Go early or late in the day, and aim for weekdays if you can.
Photography: Morning light is flattering on Rainier’s south side; late afternoon can be lovely too, with softer light on the meadows. In shoulder seasons, check for snow coverage before you go.
