Overview

About Fall Hollow Waterfall

Why stop

  • Multiple cascades and a 20-foot waterfall

Heads up

  • Steep, slick footing beyond the viewing deck
One of only two waterfalls along the Parkway, and you can hear it within seconds of shutting the car door. Water slides over a 20-foot drop into a wooded hollow, with smaller cascades stacked along the same stream. For a stop that costs you ten minutes to an hour, the payoff is unusually good.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

After spring rains the flow is strongest and the whole hollow is loud. Cold, clear winter days trade volume for ice and open sightlines through leafless trees. Come in daylight since the hollow shades early, and choose a drier, cooler stretch if you want the safest footing on the descent.

More about Fall Hollow Waterfall

What you'll see and doA short trail from the pull-off, crossing small creeks on wooden bridges
  • A short trail from the pull-off, crossing small creeks on wooden bridges
  • An observation deck looking straight at the main falls, the natural turnaround for most visitors
  • Multiple cascades and ledges visible along the way, framed by trees
  • A rockier, steeper path continuing beyond the deck for the surefooted
What makes it differentMost Parkway stops are overlooks or history markers.

Most Parkway stops are overlooks or history markers. This one is about sound and water: the descent is audible from the parking area, and the hollow feels enclosed and green in a way the ridgetop road does not. In cold weather the falls and stream can take on ice under bare trees, which is a genuinely different sight from the leafy spring version.

Practical tipsConfirmed amenities at this stop include parking, a viewpoint, and the trailhead.
  • Confirmed amenities at this stop include parking, a viewpoint, and the trailhead.
  • Wear real shoes. Trail surfaces, roots, and the platforms get slick from spray and general moisture.
  • Do not climb the rocks around the falls. They are dangerously slippery, and the official guidance is to stay off them.
  • Treat the deck as your destination unless you're comfortable with steep, rocky footing.
Honest drawbacksThe parking area is small, so a couple of cars ahead of you can mean waiting or moving on.

The parking area is small, so a couple of cars ahead of you can mean waiting or moving on. The path is easy to the deck but wayfinding isn't perfect, and tree roots plus wet rock make a twisted ankle a real possibility if you rush. Water volume varies with recent rain, so a dry spell means a thinner curtain than photos suggest.
