Before you go

Best time to go

Spring and fall are typically the busiest camping seasons, especially around holiday weekends, so arriving earlier in the day gives you more choice of sites. The regional climate is generally mild in spring, warm and humid in summer, comfortable in fall, and mild but wet in winter, making spring and fall the most pleasant stretches for tent camping.

“Up ahead is the Meriwether Lewis Monument, where a broken stone shaft marks the explorer's grave. Built in 1848, the broken top was deliberate, a nineteenth-century way to show a life cut short.”

  • Potable drinking water and flush toilets.
  • Picnic tables and grills or fire rings at sites.
  • No electricity, no showers, no dump station, and no utility hookups of any kind.

Since there are no hookups or showers, come self-sufficient: your own power source for anything you need to charge, containers for hauling water to your site, firewood or charcoal for the grill or fire ring, cooking gear, lighting, and toiletries plus a plan for washing up. Bug protection and rain gear are sensible given the wooded setting and the region's wet winters and humid summers.

The lack of showers, hookups, and a dump station means longer stays take planning, and RV travelers should confirm their rig fits within the 55-foot length and 14-foot height limits. Because sites cannot be reserved, availability depends on when you arrive. The 14-day annual limit also rules out extended basecamping here.
