Overview

About Rocky Springs Historic Site

Why stop

  • Church, cemetery, safes, and cisterns give the story tangible remains

Heads up

  • Very little of the town survives
At milepost 54.8, this is the site of a rural community that once covered about 25 square miles and peaked at roughly 2,600 people, and today it is marked mainly by a church, a cemetery, and scattered traces. The draw is the story of a town that disappeared, read on interpretive information beside a short walk to what is left.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Come in daylight, since the value of the stop is in reading the interpretation and spotting the remains. Expect little of the town to be visible, and remember that the spring no longer flows. This works best as one stop on a longer Parkway drive rather than a destination worth a special trip.

Access

The church and cemetery sit on private land but are open to visitors, and they are reached from the Rocky Springs area by a side trail. Amenities listed for the town site itself are historical and interpretive information and exhibits, auto parking, a restroom, and a trailhead. The adjacent Rocky Springs Picnic Area and Trailhead adds picnic tables and restrooms, and the Rocky Springs Section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail runs 8 miles north to its northern terminus or 2.5 miles south to Owens Creek. There is also a short Old Trace segment nearby. Keep these separate from the old town remains, which are the side-trail destination.

  • Early travelers called the area "the Rocky Spring," and settlement began in the late 1790s and continued until about 1860.
  • Trades here included carpenters, wheelwrights, a well digger, cabinet makers, a cotton-gin maker, and blacksmiths.
  • By the mid-1800s the community had a church, post office, Masonic Lodge, and possibly a school.
  • The Civil War damaged the area, and yellow fever struck in 1878; an account from 1873 recorded 180 cases and 43 deaths.
  • Boll weevils devastated cotton in the early 1900s, the population declined, and the last store closed during the 1930s.
  • The nearby spring no longer flows.

The survivors listed by the Park Service are the church and cemetery, two rusting safes, and several abandoned cisterns. A short trail reaches two of the three original bank safes, and the third is displayed at an information center. This is a modest remains-and-interpretation stop, so plan on reading the story and looking for traces rather than touring a town.

The adjacent Rocky Springs Campground has 22 first-come, first-served sites, with picnic tables, restrooms, potable water, and self-guiding walking trails through the old town site and spring. That campground is typically busiest in spring and fall, especially holiday weekends, which is worth knowing if you are counting on the surrounding area being uncrowded.
