Overview
If you’re after a true high‑country ridge walk with a hut payoff, Robert Ridge delivers. Starting above St Arnaud, it follows an exposed alpine crest to Angelus Hut beside Rotomaninitua/Lake Angelus (about 1650 m). It’s spectacular in fine weather and serious in bad—treat it like an alpine trip, not a stroll.
Route at a Glance
- Distance/time: about 11–12 km one way; allow ~6 hours in good summer conditions. In heavy snow or ice, parties can take up to 9 hours.
- Terrain: steep/rocky in places, fully exposed to wind and weather; a slip in spots could be serious.
- Rest points: Relax Shelter and Bushline Shelter sit near the bushline for quick breaks.
Hazards and Conditions
- Weather turns quickly; whiteouts can hide marker poles even in summer. Expect strong winds and serious windchill.
- Ice can linger above the bushline into December. Slips are common when it’s icy.
- Avalanches: common June–October and can extend into November/December; all Angelus approaches cross avalanche terrain.
- No drinking water on Robert Ridge; carry everything you need.
- Limited mobile reception—some coverage on parts of the ridge only.
- Insects: sandflies are persistent; wasps are common January–April.
- Treat water elsewhere for possible giardia.
What to Bring
Year‑round: sturdy boots; warm base/mid layers and a waterproof shell; hat, gloves, sunscreen; plenty of water and extra food; map/compass and/or GPS; headlamp with spare batteries; personal locator beacon.
Winter/icy conditions (May–Oct, and whenever snow/ice lingers): crampons, ice axe, and full avalanche kit (transceiver, probe, shovel) plus the skills to use them.
Angelus Hut Essentials
- Popular and must be booked in season; capacity about 28 bunks.
- Bring your own stove/cookware. In winter the plumbing is disconnected; you may need to collect lake water and treat it. Firewood isn’t guaranteed and the hut can be very cold—after storms you might even dig to reach the door.
Access, Parking, Toilets, and Water
- Start from the Mount Robert car park above St Arnaud; the access road is steep, unsealed, and dusty—many trampers opt for a local shuttle.
- Toilets: long‑drop at Pinchgut car park and at Angelus Hut; none on Robert Ridge itself (pack your own toilet paper).
- Water: none on the ridge; at the hut, treat all water. Plan as if shelters have no water or toilets.
- In summer, a Lake Rotoiti water taxi can help with loop options via Coldwater/Lakehead.
Planning Tools and Smarts
Check the forecast before you go and speak with the Rotoiti/Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre for current track and avalanche info. A webcam covers the Angelus Basin. Set a firm turnaround time—bluebird can become whiteout fast.
Best Time to Visit
- Summer and shoulder season (November–April) offer the most straightforward travel, but weather still changes rapidly. Start early for calmer conditions and ample daylight.
- Winter/snowy periods (May–October, and early summer if icy) are for experienced, well‑equipped parties only due to ice and avalanche terrain.
- Weekends tend to be busier from mid‑afternoon; mornings are quieter. If you’ve booked the hut, aim to arrive well before dark.
