Circle the shoreline of Lake Rotoiti on a well‑formed tramping track through red and silver beech forest with near‑constant water views. Most walkers treat it as a big day out or a relaxed 1–2 day overnight using the lakeside huts. Expect a mostly gentle track with a few short climbs and occasional rough or muddy patches. Total distance varies: the classic loop is roughly 25–26 km (about 16 miles) when the Travers River is safely fordable, or about 33 km (20+ miles) if you must detour to the swingbridge. The landscape was carved by the Travers Glacier between roughly 20,000 and 12,000 years ago, and birdlife is a highlight throughout.
Start and finish at Kerr Bay in St Arnaud (West Bay is an alternative car park). Either direction works; some prefer going anti‑clockwise to get the short road/hill section out of the way early. Typical sections: Kerr Bay → Lakehead Hut (~9–10 km, about 3 hr); Lakehead Hut → Coldwater Hut via a marked ford when flows are low (~50–60 min), or via the swingbridge upstream if the river is high (~3 hr from Lakehead Hut); Coldwater Hut → Whisky Falls → West Bay (~10 km, 2.5–3.5 hr); West Bay → Kerr Bay (~3.5–4 km, about 1 hr) with a brief climb away from the lakeshore near Mt Robert Road. Don’t miss the short side track to Whisky Falls (~40 m) about an hour north of Coldwater Hut.
Lakehead Hut (28 bunks, serviced) and Coldwater Hut (12 bunks, standard) sit at the south end of the lake and work well for an overnight. Water taxis operate on Lake Rotoiti and can drop or collect you at jetties near Lakehead, Coldwater, and Whisky Falls to shorten or customize the day. The track is well signposted but still carry a map/app. St Arnaud’s DOC Visitor Centre is close by for current track and weather info.
This is an all‑season low‑level circuit, but alpine weather can roll in any time—pack warm, waterproof layers year‑round. Summer brings great swimming and long daylight for the full loop; start early if you plan to do it in one day.
The Travers River crossing between Lakehead and Coldwater is the key decision point: only ford when it’s clearly low and safe; otherwise use the swingbridge (adds time and distance). Wasps (especially near toilets) and sandflies can be persistent—cover up and carry repellent. Expect occasional rough/muddy patches and slippery river rocks; consider dedicated footwear for the ford. There are no bins—pack out all rubbish. Drones require a permit on public conservation land.
Primary parking at Kerr Bay in St Arnaud; West Bay car park is a good alternative start/finish.
Only ford the Travers River when flows are clearly low; otherwise use the swingbridge. Wasps and sandflies are common; carry repellent. Weather can turn cold and wet any time. Pack out all rubbish; drones need a permit.
