Bushline Hut

Overview

Perched around 1,250 m on the St Arnaud Range, Bushline Hut is a 14‑bunk, serviced DOC hut that looks out toward Lake Rotoiti and the village of St Arnaud. It’s a classic first overnight or a relaxed waypoint on the way to bigger objectives like Angelus. The original hut burned down; today’s hut dates from 1989 and has been steadily improved since.

Getting There

The hut sits on the Mt Robert Circuit with two straightforward approaches:

• Pinchgut Track (~4.6 km): steeper, a continuous zig‑zag that gains the views quickly.
• Paddy’s Track (~4.8 km): the gentler option, starting through bush before climbing to the hut.

Both tracks begin from the end of Mt Robert Road. There are multiple parking bays; the upper carpark has toilets, while a lower bay 300 m down the road offers no shade.

Hut Life & Amenities

Inside you’ll find platform bunks with mattresses, a closed fire/wood stove, an internal sink, and long‑drop toilets just outside. Water is collected off the roof into a tank—treat or boil it before drinking, and expect possible freeze‑ups in winter. Reception is generally good at the hut itself, though most of the approach has little to no coverage. Outside, there are spots to sit (including picnic tables), and the setting makes lingering over views an easy sell.

What You’ll See

The payoff here is perspective: wide views over Lake Rotoiti and the surrounding valleys from the bushline and nearby slopes. Clear afternoons can be especially pretty, and the hut’s position makes it an easy place to savor golden hour before retreating to the fire.

Conditions, Seasonality & Challenges

This is an alpine‑edge hut—expect strong winds and rapid weather shifts on the exposed sections. In winter, snow and ice can complicate travel and the hut water supply may freeze. In late summer, bees sometimes drift inside. The hut’s popularity means bunks can fill; plan accordingly.

Responsible Travel & Biosecurity

Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa are affected by lindavia (“lake snow”). Dry all gear completely for 48 hours before entering any alpine lake or tarn, or use DOC cleaning stations at Coldwater, Lakehead, and Sabine Huts to disinfect wet items. Do not touch the water in Rotomairewhenua/Blue Lake or Rotopōhueroa/Lake Constance. Isolated carparks in the area are sometimes targeted by thieves—don’t leave valuables; the Rotoiti/Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre offers bag storage.

Best Time to Visit

• For views and comfort: fine‑weather days from spring through autumn.
• For photography: late afternoon to sunset offers lovely light from the bushline.
• For fewer people: weekdays outside holiday periods.
• Winter is possible but only with suitable gear and experience; expect snow/ice and cold interiors until the stove is running.

This is a bookable serviced hut—reserve through DOC. Carry your own treatment for roof‑tank water, pack a headlamp for late finishes, and follow standard hut etiquette (share space, pack out rubbish).
