A bite‑size intro to Lake Rotoiti’s honeydew beech forest, the Bellbird Walk is a wheelchair‑standard loop at Kerr Bay that’s all about birdsong and smart interpretive panels. Plan on about 15 minutes total: roughly 5 minutes of actual walking plus ~10 minutes to linger at the signs. Distance is very short, but the pay‑off is immediate.
You’ll wander beneath large red beech with trunks often darkened by sooty mould—evidence of the sugary “honeydew” produced by scale insects, a key food source in this ecosystem. Expect tūī and bellbirds to be active, with other insect‑eating forest birds around. Keep an eye out for the deciduous New Zealand fuchsia (notable here because possums have hammered it elsewhere). A small wetland pocket adds sedges, rushes, ferns, and mosses to the mix.
This loop introduces the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project, a "mainland island" where DOC and volunteers intensively control possums, stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats, mice, and wasps across more than 5,000 hectares so native species can rebound. The track’s panels make the conservation story clear without feeling like homework.
Start at the car park by the east jetty at Kerr Bay, at the end of Kerr Bay Road in St Arnaud. The surface is built to wheelchair standard and sheltered by forest, making it a stress‑free leg stretch right by the lake.
Early morning is your best bet for peak birdsong. Because it’s short, it’s an easy add‑on before or after longer outings.
If this tastes good and you want seconds: the Honeydew Walk (about 45 minutes) heads deeper into the same forest; the Loop Track (about 1 hr 30 min) links terraces and the lakeshore and can be muddy after rain; Black Valley Walk (about 30 minutes) follows a glacial stream; Brunner Peninsula Nature Walk (about 1 hour, or 1 hr 30 min to Rotoiti Lodge) threads to West Bay with varied plants and lakeshore access.
Underrated as a quick, high‑value nature primer. Come for the tūī and bellbirds, stay for the conservation story—and use it as a springboard to the longer Kerr Bay tracks if you’ve got time.

If you extend onto the Honeydew Walk, short steeper sections may require assistance; the longer Loop Track can be muddy after rain.
