Kea Hut

Overview

Kea Hut is a small, historic ski hut tucked just above the bushline on Mt Robert. It sits right off Paddy’s Track on the Mt Robert Circuit, making it a quick, worthwhile photo stop as you pass. It’s privately owned by the Nelson Ski Club and kept locked, so think of it as a heritage landmark to admire from the outside rather than a place to stay.

Where It Is and How to See It

Start at the Mt Robert Road car park and walk the Mt Robert Circuit: up Pinchgut Track, along past Bushline Hut and Kea Hut, then down Paddy’s Track. DOC times put Bushline Hut at about 2 hr 30 min from the road end, with the full circuit typically around 5 hr return on an advanced tramping track. Kea Hut is very close to Paddy’s Track and only a short hop above Bushline Hut, so you’ll almost certainly pass it on the loop.

A Bit of History

Built in 1933–34 by early members of the Nelson Ski Club, Kea Hut is one of the area’s early ski-era relics. It’s been looked after by local ski/heritage volunteers, and today it’s valued as a preserved piece of Mt Robert’s alpine story.

Facilities and What to Expect

The hut itself is locked and not a DOC facility. Don’t plan on using it for shelter, water or toilets. If you need facilities while on the circuit, use nearby Bushline Hut (water tanks and long-drop toilets are available there, though tanks can run dry). Down at road level, the Mt Robert car park has basic amenities, and if you want more comfort for camping or picnicking, Kerr Bay by Lake Rotoiti is the better base.

Conditions and Access Notes

Mt Robert is exposed above the bushline—expect strong winds on the tops. The Mt Robert Road gate can be locked when the road is icy. As with many isolated car parks, don’t leave valuables in your vehicle.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for clear, calmer days when the road isn’t icy and winds are down. You’re just here for an exterior look and a photo, so it pairs well with a fair‑weather lap of the Mt Robert Circuit.
