Overview

About Holmsley Campsite

Why stop

  • Open heathland-and-woodland setting with ponies nearby
  • Easy base for New Forest walking and cycling

Heads up

  • Busy family periods can make the main area lively
  • Exposed pitches and weak mobile signal
This campground sits on part of a former WWII airfield near Burley, with New Forest trees, ancient specimens and open heathland right on the doorstep. It is an unusual mix: a wide, airy setting with real history under the grass, plus forest tracks that lead straight out for walking, cycling and horse riding without needing to drive anywhere first.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The campground operates seasonally, so confirm the current opening period before planning around it. Midweek and quieter stretches of the season are more likely to feel calm, while school holidays and weekends bring the busiest, liveliest atmosphere. Because most pitches are unallocated, arriving early on your first day gives you the best choice of space, shelter and distance from the central hub.

Facilities and preparation

Expect a genuinely well-equipped site rather than a wild one: shop, takeaway, play area, toilets, showers and washbasins, laundry, dish washing, drinking water, chemical disposal, motorhome service point, dog wash, EV charging and accessible facilities, with wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking and restroom listed. Reviews consistently praise clean and functional washrooms, a well-stocked shop and friendly staff.

Come self-sufficient anyway. Mobile signal can be weak, so download maps and route notes before you arrive, and agree meeting points with anyone travelling separately. Dogs are welcome, and a dog wash on site is useful after muddy forest walks.

Cooking: use robust raised barbecues only. Disposable barbecues are discouraged.

Pitches include electric hook-up options plus non-electric hardstanding and grass, and most are unallocated, so you choose your spot on arrival. Reviewers regularly mention generous space between campers, a natural feel, and quieter ground around the edges if you want distance from the busier middle of the site.

Ponies and other forest animals roam freely; they are not attractions, and they can behave unpredictably. Do not feed, pet or approach them, since they can bite and kick. Keep food sealed and out of reach in tents, awnings and cars, and make sure children understand the rules before they run off to explore.

  • The central and playground area can be lively or noisy during busy family periods; pitch nearer the edges if you want calm.
  • Some pitches are exposed and have less shelter, so check what you are choosing before you unpack.
  • Mobile signal can be weak, which may make remote working and casual browsing unreliable.
  • Facility opinions are mixed, so standards may not match every expectation even though most feedback is positive.
Why it is worth a stayWildlife on your doorstep.

Wildlife on your doorstep. Ponies graze close to the pitches and other forest wildlife passes through, which is a large part of the appeal for families.
