Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The campsite is open year-round. Because visitors repeatedly mention busy or full sunny weekends, weekdays and dates outside school holidays are the sensible choice if a calm pitch matters most to you. The tree cover means plenty of shade, which is welcome in warm weather, and early morning or late afternoon light is when the woodland looks best. Whenever you go, bring kit that matches the weather, since there are no facilities to retreat to.

A wooded camp, not a facility park

Setthorns sits inside Set Thorns Inclosure, with pitches tucked among pines, oaks and bushes rather than laid out in open rows. Winding internal tracks thread between the pitches, so many feel private and well screened, and the site is open all year round. There are hardstanding and electric hook-up pitches, plus seasonal and extra-large pitches, and it takes tents, trailer tents, touring caravans and motor homes. Dogs are welcome.

Campers come back for the same thing: quiet, shady, spread-out woodland camping where you hear birds more than neighbours. Staff get consistently friendly mentions, and some visitors enjoy being able to look around and pick a spot that suits them. Nothing here is guaranteed, though: a sunny weekend with the site full will feel noticeably busier than a midweek night in the trees.

This is a base for getting into the forest on foot or by bike, not a place you drive out from every day. Forest tracks lead away from the site, and there is a disused railway line nearby that is used as an off-road route by walkers and cyclists, part of why the campsite suits both. Bring bikes if you have them.

Free-roaming ponies, cattle and occasionally deer move through and around this part of the forest, and birdlife is one of the reasons people choose Setthorns. Sightings are luck, not a feature. The rules matter: do not feed, pet or approach free-roaming animals, keep food sealed and out of reach, and use only robust raised barbecues, never disposable ones.

No toilets, no showers: pack accordinglyBe clear on this before booking.

Be clear on this before booking. There are no toilets and no showers on site, and you must bring your own chemical toilet. What is provided is chemical-toilet disposal and drinking-water taps, with battery charging and storage also available. Plan for full self-sufficiency: your own washing setup, water containers, cooking gear and rubbish discipline.

Signal and nearby villagesMobile signal is limited and varies by network, so download maps and routes before you arrive…

Mobile signal is limited and varies by network, so download maps and routes before you arrive and expect patchy contact. Sway is roughly 1.5 miles away and Brockenhurst about 3 miles, which is where you go for shops, pubs and trains; reception puts Sway station at around a 35 minute walk. Buses run from Sway but not past the site itself. One practical note: some sat-navs aim at New Milton with this postcode, so entering Sway is the safer target.

Honest tradeoffsRecurring gripes are predictable and fair.

Recurring gripes are predictable and fair. No facilities means real effort, internal tracks can be dusty or feel trafficked when the site is busy, phone signal frustrates some people, and a packed weekend erodes the quiet that draws people here. If you want showers, a shop or a lively campsite hub, look elsewhere.
