“The map and the shoreline tell different stories at Hordle. A sixteenth-century map places its old village close to the coast. Erosion gradually took that settlement, while people moved inland.”

New Milton and Barton-on-Sea Walk is a 4-mile loop from New Milton railway station to Barton-on-Sea beach and back through town. It follows the New Forest’s coastal edge, outside the formal National Park boundary, and suits a town-and-sea outing more than a forest walk. Allow about two hours for the moderate circuit.

Where the walk changesFrom the station, follow Barton Court Road through town streets, then drop to the beachfront.

From the station, follow Barton Court Road through town streets, then drop to the beachfront. Follow the shore before climbing back up to a sandy path and Sea Road. The return heads inland on Christchurch Road and Old Milton Road and crosses New Milton Recreation Ground to the station. Most of the distance is on streets; the beach and open coast are the payoff.

The descent to the beach and climb back to the top are the main change in effort, with town paving, sand, and a sandy path underfoot. New Milton station is the mapped start and the clearest verified way to reach the route by rail. Shops and cafés are on the high street. Eroding cliffs border the shore, so keep to signed paths and away from unstable ground.
