About Verderers' Hall

Why stop

  • Rare surviving Forest court
  • Distinctive insight into New Forest commoning

Heads up

  • Usually accessible only on scheduled open days or court meetings
  • Small, specialized visit
At the top of Lyndhurst High Street, attached to The King's House (formerly Queen's House) and next to St Michael's church, this red-brick hall is the meeting place of the Verderers' Court, one of only two remaining Verderers' Courts in England. Courts for the Forest were authorised by the Crown to deal with Forest Law offences, and a building for them was put up in or beside Lyndhurst's old manor house in 1388; the present hall is believed to stand on the same site. Most of what you see in the New Forest is landscape and livestock. This is the working institution behind it.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Plan the trip around an announced open day or public court meeting rather than the weather, and confirm the schedule before you set out. Because there is no parking at the Hall, allow extra time to park in the village and make the uphill walk, and aim to arrive before the session starts rather than during it. If the timetable gives you a choice, a dry day makes the walk up the High Street and the wait outside more comfortable.

How access works

The Hall is usually open only for announced special events and public Verderers' Court meetings. Court sittings are normally monthly, and the public may attend the open portion of proceedings, subject to court regulations. Check what is scheduled before travelling, because turning up on a random afternoon will most likely mean looking at the outside of the building only.

The Court was reconstituted under the New Forest Act 1877 and is still active, made up of five elected and five appointed Verderers. Its job includes protecting the Forest's traditional commoning rights, the practice that puts ponies, cattle and pigs out on the open Forest, along with the landscape itself. Understanding that helps explain why the New Forest looks the way it does, rather than simply looking at it.

When the Hall is accessible, the interior carries the marks of centuries of Forest justice: the rough-hewn dock used by people bringing presentments before the Court, the Crown Stirrup long associated with Rufus, and mounted deer heads recalling the Forest's role as a royal hunting ground. Interpretation on site sets out the Court's history and its present-day function, following refurbishment work that included quarry tiles, timber features, paintwork and improved access.

Practical notes and honest drawbacksNo on-site parking. Use the main Lyndhurst car park and walk uphill along the High Street.
  • No on-site parking. Use the main Lyndhurst car park and walk uphill along the High Street.
  • No toilets and no catering at the Hall itself, though Lyndhurst's High Street is a couple of minutes away.
  • This is a short, narrow, schedule-dependent visit, not a day out. If you want a big attraction with facilities, this is not it.
  • Interior objects are only there to be seen when the Hall is actually open, so treat any visit as conditional.
