Overview

About Acres Down Viewpoint

Why stop

  • Wide New Forest views from open heath
  • Strong seasonal raptor and heathland birdwatching

Heads up

  • Paths can be muddy after rain
  • Bird sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed
Acres Down is a raised heathland area reaching nearly 90 metres above sea level, one of the higher points in the New Forest. The open ridge opens up broad views over the surrounding forest, and in clear weather you may be able to pick out the Isle of Wight on the horizon. It is a short, simple detour that trades car-park convenience for a genuine sense of height and space.

Before you go

Best time to go

  • Dry spells suit this walk best, since woodland sections and low ground can be muddy after rain.
  • Early or quieter times help, because the parking area is limited.
  • Spring and summer are the strongest seasons for raptor watching from the ridge.
  • Sturdy footwear is sensible for heath, gravel track and wet patches.

“Up ahead is Acres Down, where a walk up from the car park reaches open heath above the surrounding forest. I'd go up for the wide view even if you don't take the longer circuit through the woods.”

  • From the official car park, take the southerly path that climbs onto the open heathland ridge.
  • A common route then descends into deciduous woodland and returns through the wood, mixing open heath with gravel tracks, a pond and patches of wet ground.
  • A documented circuit runs about 4.75 miles (7.6 km) with roughly 87 metres (286 feet) of ascent, and shorter or longer variations are easy to piece together.
  • Despite the high point, the terrain feels gently rolling rather than mountainous.

This is a well regarded spot for birds, especially from the open ground where you can scan a wide sky. Look for displaying goshawk in early spring and the rare honey buzzard in summer, along with woodlark, redstart, marsh tit, great spotted woodpecker, treecreeper, meadow pipit and stonechat. Around 20 species on an average visit is a realistic expectation, so bring binoculars and be prepared to stand and wait.

Honest drawbacksThe official car park is small, with 12 spaces and no toilets, and it can fill at busy times.
  • The official car park is small, with 12 spaces and no toilets, and it can fill at busy times. It serves the walk rather than acting as a visitor centre.
  • Some woodland paths are vague or poorly defined, so a map or GPS route is useful if you want to follow the full circuit.
  • The open ridge is the rewarding part; the wooded sections are quieter but less scenic and often wetter underfoot.
