Parking and access

The trail begins beside a one-car pullout on the west side of US-101; a larger pullout is across the highway. That crossing has no crosswalk and a 55-mph speed limit, so use extreme caution. If the spaces are full, choose another beach rather than parking unsafely along the road. Van-accessible parking is across from the trailhead, but the narrow, steep, rooty route is not wheelchair-accessible.

Kalaloch Beach 2 is a Pacific beach reached from US-101 by a 385-foot trail through spruce. It’s a good short stop for the layered shore and unusual spruce burls, but the route is steeper than its distance suggests: it rises and falls about 60 feet, with a rooty 15–22% descent near the beach. Visitors often describe it as quiet, but the tiny pullouts can fill.

At about 295 feet, the trail splits. Keep left for another 90 feet to the beach; the right branch is slightly shorter at 75 feet but rocky and dense with exposed roots. At the bottom, you’ll need to work around drift logs. There are three beach levels: two rocky terraces with 4–6-foot drops down to sand.

The spruce trunks along the approach have distinctive burls, an unusual detail on such a short walk. On the beach, the drift logs stand out against the open Pacific and the coastal bluff. For a photo, include one of the logs with the surf to give the broad, layered shore some scale.

Food and restrooms aren’t listed at this access, so treat it as a simple beach stop. For longer walks on the Olympic coast, check the tides: some stretches become impassable at high water, although Beach 2 itself isn’t identified as a tide trap.
