Ruby Beach

Ruby Beach is the northernmost beach access in Olympic National Park’s Kalaloch area: a short coastal-forest approach opens onto a rocky Pacific shore crowded with sea stacks and enormous driftwood. It is one of the park’s defining coastal stops. Stay at the overlook for the broad view, or descend to explore the tide pools and walk the shoreline. Low tide gives you the most room to see the pools and move among the rocks.

The gravel lot can fill by late morning at popular times, so an early arrival makes parking easier. The beach access is only about 735 feet from the lot, but the distance undersells the effort: the compacted-gravel route has steep grades and drainage dips, and the beach itself is uneven underfoot.

An ocean-viewing area sits beside the north end of the parking lot, so you can take in the stacks without going down to the shore. It is described as an accessible viewpoint, with a lower section of rail; shrubs can partly block the view at seated height.

The route to the beach is also described as wheelchair accessible, but it is not an easy roll: sections are steep, and cross-drain dips include drops of several inches. Check the surface and grade against your needs before committing. On the beach, wet rocks, loose stones and heavy logs add another layer of awkward footing.

At low water, shallow pools open among the rocks, with sea stars, anemones and crabs to look for. Higher water can cover the pools and restrict how far you can explore beside the stacks. Check a tide table before planning a long walk; the southward shoreline route is especially tide-dependent. Cedar Creek reaches the beach in a broad pool, another good place to pause and look for marine life.

The bleached logs are part of the landscape here, not a tidy line above the surf. Winter swells move them around, so the route across the shore can look different from one visit to the next. Between the creek, tide pools and stacks, this beach rewards a slow wander more than a quick dash to the water.
