Sol Duc Falls

The path starts beyond the hot springs resort at the end of Sol Duc Road. It winds through old-growth forest on a wide, maintained trail, crosses a small stream and reaches a historic shelter near the falls. You’ll often hear the water before the canyon opens.

The crossing bridge puts you beside the falls, where water funnels into separate chutes and plunges down rock. Walk to the upstream and downstream viewpoints too; each gives a different view of the canyon. Spray can reach you at the falls. For a photo, keep the rock walls in frame around the water so the drop reads as a narrow gorge, not just a white blur.

The Sol Duc River carries coho on their way toward lakes and mountain headwaters. About five miles down the road, Salmon Cascades is a separate viewing stop, especially around late October and early November, when coho may leap the falls. It’s a nice add-on, but it’s not the same place as Sol Duc Falls.

The hot springs area nearby was once a resort destination in its own right. The Sol Duc Hotel opened in 1912 as a five-star hotel that drew visitors from around the world, then burned in 1920. Today, the hot springs resort on the drive in offers mineral pools and dining; it’s a separate stop from the waterfall trail.

The falls sit at the end of Sol Duc Road, a 14-mile spur from U.S. 101. Parking is at the road end, and the walk continues beyond the resort. The bridge can be busy, and the parking lot sometimes fills on sunny weekend mornings, so an earlier start is a better bet. Dogs aren’t allowed on the trail, and road conditions can change, so check the park’s current status before making the drive.

If you’re already heading up the valley, this is an easy stop to keep: plan on about a mile each way from the road-end parking lot and roughly 200 feet of climb. The trail is a real walk, not a drive-up viewpoint, but it stays short and manageable for most hikers.
