Why this trail
If you’re camped at Graves Creek or just finishing a bigger Quinault Valley day, this short loop is the perfect low-effort dose of temperate rainforest. It’s an easy 0.9-mile loop (total) through moss-draped giants, sword ferns, and a tangle of green that feels straight out of a storybook.
What you’ll see
Expect classic Quinault Valley rainforest: western hemlock, Sitka spruce, Douglas-fir, and bigleaf maple cloaked in moss. The route sidles up to clear, rushing Graves Creek more than once, so you’ll have the soundtrack of moving water as you wander. In wetter seasons, fungi are everywhere—keep your eyes on decaying logs and the base of stumps.
Trail feel and difficulty
It’s an easy loop with minimal elevation change and a natural dirt tread that can be rooty and muddy after rain. Reports noted a partial washout as of February 2023; depending on conditions, you may need to turn around or pick your way cautiously. Otherwise, the path is straightforward and typically quiet compared to the nearby backpacker trailheads.
Logistics
Trailhead is at Graves Creek Campground at the end of Graves Creek Road; the loop begins across from the campground restrooms. There’s parking and restrooms on site. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails. A park entrance pass is required to park in the area.
Best time to hike
March through October brings the easiest conditions and the fullest, greenest canopy. Spring and early summer mean peak creek flow and lush growth; fall lights up the bigleaf maples. Winter can be wonderfully moody, but expect slick, muddy footing and be prepared for closures or washouts. For more solitude, go early or late in the day.
