Audubon House & Tropical Gardens is a restored three-story 1840s home in Key West, built for Captain John Huling Geiger and now open as a house museum. The visit pairs furnished rooms, Geiger family objects and Audubon bird art with a tropical garden. If preserved homes and natural-history art are your kind of stop, this is a good one; just get the name’s history straight before you go. Visitors often describe a short introduction before exploring the rooms and garden on their own.

John James Audubon visited Key West in 1832, but the house standing here was built in 1846–49, so he never lived in this building. The connection is to the property: an earlier home stood on the lot, and its garden supplied plants Audubon used in images of local birds. Think of this as a Geiger family house with an Audubon story, not Audubon’s former home.

A hurricane hit Key West in October 1846, and Geiger began building his family home in the years that followed. Its timber frame and floors use Dade County Pine, its exterior doors are cypress, and its staircase is mahogany. The builders joined the wooden structure with mortise-and-tenon work, so the house’s history is visible in its materials as well as in the furnishings.

Four generations at homeFour generations of the Geiger family lived here for nearly 110 years.

Four generations of the Geiger family lived here for nearly 110 years. Captain William Bradford Smith, John Huling Geiger’s great-grandson, was the last descendant to live in the house; for more than 20 years he lived there without electricity, running water or an indoor kitchen. That long family stretch gives the rooms a more personal story than a house arranged only around its first owner.

Why the house survivedThe house was nearly lost to a gas-station project in 1958.

The house was nearly lost to a gas-station project in 1958. Mitchell and Frances Wolfson bought and restored it, and the museum opened in 1960 after two years of work. The restoration helped spur Key West’s wider preservation movement, which makes this a stop about both an old family home and the city’s decision to keep its historic buildings.

The garden adds a quieter outdoor part to the house visit, including an herb garden and a replica cook house that shows how a mid-19th-century kitchen could be kept apart from the main home. There is also a gallery and gift shop. The white facade, porch, green shutters and fence are visible from Whitehead Street; for a photo, include some of the fence and garden foliage so the raised porch and house frontage read clearly.
