Key West Shipwreck Museum

Key West Shipwreck Museum is a two-level maritime-history attraction near Mallory Square, built to evoke a 19th-century wrecker's warehouse. Recovered artifacts, costumed interpreters and film exhibits tell how wreckers worked the Florida Reef. It suits a focused history stop; some visitors find the displays brief for a ticketed attraction.

During the age of sail, wreckers watched the reef from towers or patrolled in small boats. They raced to stranded vessels; the first to arrive became wrecking master, and courts set salvage shares at 25–50% based on difficulty and time. As railroads and improved navigation reduced wrecks, the wrecking courts closed in 1921.

One focus is the merchant ship Isaac Allerton, lost in a hurricane on August 28, 1856, off Saddlebunch Keys, roughly 15 miles east-southeast of Key West. Partly salvaged after sinking, the wreck was rediscovered in 1985. Its artifacts anchor the collection, including a genuine silver bar visitors can lift.

The 65-foot tower gives elevated views over Old Town, Mallory Square and the surrounding water. It recalls the lookout towers wreckers used to watch the reef, some more than 90 feet high. Reaching the top involves stairs; if you need step-free access, check which parts of the museum are reachable before visiting. For a distinctive view, frame the rooftops with water from the tower.
