Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

The quarry exposes Key Largo Limestone, built from ancient coral heads and other marine fossils. Some cuts rise about eight feet; look closely and you can pick out star, brain and finger coral shapes in the pale rock. The reef formed in shallow seas when sea level stood tens of feet above the quarry today. In places, red terra rossa marks what remained after rain dissolved limestone; much of that residue came from dust blown across the Atlantic.

Henry Flagler bought the land from the Russel family in 1908 for $852.80. Its limestone was quarried for fill used in the Florida East Coast Railway’s Key West Extension. Later, stone was cut into heavy blocks, polished and sold as decorative Keystone. The channeling machine cut blocks weighing ten tons; a gin pole dragged them across the quarry floor. The old equipment is still displayed here, giving the fossil walls a human-scale industrial story.

The trails wind through tropical hardwood hammock and mangrove-edge habitat before dropping into quarry cuts. The half-mile Green Hammock Trail reaches the Russel Quarry, described as the park’s oldest quarried area. Official pages give different totals for the whole trail network, so use the numbered signs and the center’s guide to choose a walk instead of planning around one cumulative mileage figure.

The visitor center has geology and railroad exhibits, and the grounds have accessible restrooms, a refillable-water station and picnic tables. Bring something to eat if you want a picnic, plus water and insect repellent for the warm, buggy paths. The park offers a powered Trackchair for exploring the trails and quarry; ask at the center about using it.

The hardwood hammock is a spring and fall stopover for birds crossing the Gulf, which may be resting or feeding before continuing their migration. It’s a seasonal wildlife angle alongside the geology; migrants pause here to rest or feed before continuing across the Gulf.
