Hiking Quarry Station Trail

A short route to the depotQuarry Station Trail is a 0.1-mile blue-marked section in the Flagler Quarry trail network.

Quarry Station Trail is a 0.1-mile blue-marked section in the Flagler Quarry trail network. It follows the quarry wall to the low foundations of Windley Key's former railroad depot. The park map lists it separately; that distance describes the named section, not a return walk from the visitor center. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the blue section and a look around. From the education center, follow the shared marked paths to the blue junction, then continue onto the connected Flagler Quarry route or return through the trail network.

The cut walls expose Key Largo Limestone, fossil coral from an ancient reef formed nearly 125,000 years ago. The Florida East Coast Railway bought the land in 1908 for $852.80 and quarried limestone for the Overseas Railroad's bed and bridge approaches. The line was completed in 1912; local trains at Windley Key brought fresh water from the mainland and carried mail and passengers. Quarrying continued into the 1960s. At the depot, frame the low foundations against the hammock; the quarry wall nearby shows the reef's fossil patterns.

Getting there and what to expectThe marked trail system starts behind the Alison Fahrer Environmental Education Center.

The marked trail system starts behind the Alison Fahrer Environmental Education Center. Pick up the self-guided trail guide there; follow the orange Flagler Quarry route to the blue Quarry Station section. Restrooms are at the visitor center, and picnic tables are on the larger quarry circuit, with limited shade. No food or drinking water was confirmed on this short section. Mosquitoes can be persistent in the hammock, so bring repellent. A rough side path near the depot reaches a solution hole with giant leather ferns; it is separate from this mapped route. Pets are allowed only in designated park areas, and the available rule does not confirm whether this trail qualifies.
