Cradled beneath rocky bluffs in a glacially carved basin, Diamond Lake is the relaxed, choose-your-own-adventure corner of Wānaka. Native shrubland fringes a quiet lake, while well-marked tracks climb to big Lake Wānaka views or continue to the Rocky Mountain summit.
The tracks start from the Diamond Lake Conservation Area car park, about 18.5 km west of Wānaka on the sealed Mt Aspiring Road. You’ll find free parking and a single toilet at the trailhead; there are no toilets on the tracks and no tap water—bring your own. Mobile reception is often limited, so carry offline info.
Expect a mix of formed paths, stairs, and some steeper sections. After rain the track can turn muddy and slick; in winter, ice is common and parts may be unsuitable—take extreme care. Mountain bikes are permitted only as far as Diamond Lake; beyond that it’s walking only. The surrounding bluffs double as a popular summer sport-climbing area.
This area packs a lot of payoff for relatively modest effort. The Lake Wānaka Lookout nails the view-to-effort ratio, while the Rocky Mountain loop serves up wider panoramas if you’re keen to climb higher. Along the way you move through native shrubland and forest terraces sculpted by ancient ice.
You’re in a living landscape—observe wildlife from a respectful distance and don’t feed animals. Stick to formed tracks and pack out all rubbish.
Go early or late for softer light and fewer people. In winter (and on frosty mornings), expect ice on the access road and track—check conditions before you go. After heavy rain, give the mud some time to settle or bring extra traction.
