Moderate

A half‑day loop with outsized payoff, the Rocky Mountain Summit Track climbs from Diamond Lake to a broad, grassy top with sweeping views of Lake Wānaka, the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, and Mount Aspiring/Tititea. Expect roughly 5 miles total (about 8 km) and ~500 m of vertical, taking most hikers around 3 hours including photo stops. It’s moderate in good weather, but parts feel airy and can be slick.
From the Diamond Lake car park, a wide gravel path leads to the lakeshore before stairs climb to the Diamond Lake Lookout (about 1.4 km from the start). Beyond the lookout, a junction splits to Eastern and Western tracks that both reach the summit.
Take the Eastern Track for the ascent—great views come fast, with narrowing trail, easy switchbacks, and a couple of short, straightforward scrambles. A worthwhile detour heads to the Lake Wānaka Lookout (about 800 m return); near the lookout the path crosses private land—stay on the marked line. The final approach traverses a narrow section with a drop to the right before topping out on the wide, grassy summit with 360° vistas.
For variety, many start down the Western Track, then switch back to the Eastern side at the next major junction if the ground is wet. The lower Western Track is notorious for mud and, after rain, sections that behave like a small waterfall—steep, slippery, and messy. Poles are handy. If conditions are very dry, completing the Western side adds a different feel but expect rougher footing.
Surfaces can be steep, narrow, and slippery even in summer. In winter or icy spells, the Department of Conservation advises avoiding this track due to exposure and ice on both the access road and the trail. Weather turns quickly here—carry layers and a rain/wind shell, and be prepared to turn around if conditions deteriorate.
Trailhead parking is at the Diamond Lake Conservation Area, 18.5 km west of Wānaka on the Wānaka–Mt Aspiring Road. The road is sealed until just before the car park. There’s a toilet at the car park; none on the track. Mountain biking is permitted only as far as Diamond Lake.
Clear, calm mornings deliver the finest lake panoramas and make parking easier. After rain, expect mud on the western side; choose the Eastern Track up and down if it’s wet or windy.

Slippery, muddy sections—especially on the Western Track after rain; narrow exposed sections near the summit; avoid in icy conditions per DOC; stay on the marked path where the Lake Wānaka Lookout crosses private land.
