Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The campground stays open year-round, but reservation and first-come arrangements change with the season. Confirm the current booking rules before you travel rather than relying on a remembered shoulder-season date.

Facilities and cabins

The campground has year-round flush toilets, potable water, coin-operated showers, food-storage lockers, and a dump station. Four ADA-accessible cabins are available, but they have no bathroom or kitchen; bring bedding. There are no electric hookups or camp store. Firewood sales and campfire programs are seasonal.

Jedediah Smith Campground is a developed campground with 86 sites beneath old-growth coast redwoods along the Smith River, just off Highway 199 about a mile west of Hiouchi. Choose it when you want the forest and river to be part of the overnight stay; swimming and fishing are among the things visitors come here to do. The campground is open year-round.

Expect an established campgroundThis is not a remote, silent camp.

This is not a remote, silent camp. Highway 199 runs alongside the loops, traffic can carry into some sites, and privacy varies. There is a lower riverside terrace as well as loops closer to the road, so the setting changes from site to site.

A seasonal footbridge across the river connects the campground on foot with the Stout Grove area and Mill Creek Trail. It is a useful way to reach those redwood walks without driving, but the bridge is seasonal, not a year-round shortcut.

Check your vehicle sizeThe internal lanes are narrow and have tight curves.

The internal lanes are narrow and have tight curves. The maximum is 25 feet for an RV and 21 feet for a trailer, so check the full vehicle and trailer length before booking if you are near those limits.
