Dream Lake

Dream Lake is a high alpine lake beneath Hallett Peak, reached from Bear Lake Trailhead. The walk is about 1.1 miles each way with 474 feet of gain. That is short by distance, but it starts high and climbs most of the way; visitors who are not used to altitude can find it harder than the mileage suggests.

From Bear Lake, the trail climbs through forest to Nymph Lake about half a mile in, then continues over a rocky switchback and a set of steps. The main Dream Lake viewpoint comes after a small bridge near the Lake Haiyaha junction. From there, follow the north shore for a closer look at the water or keep going toward Emerald Lake.

From the main viewpoint, Hallett Peak rises west of the lake and Flattop Mountain frames the view to the right. The north shore brings you closer to the water and the twisted trees along its edge. For a different photo, look back east from the shore in the early morning; still water can catch the trees and sky in reflection.

Glaciers carved broad U-shaped valleys and left moraines across Rocky Mountain National Park. Geologists identify at least six major glaciation events over roughly 700,000 years. The high basin and steep mountain walls around Dream Lake sit within that wider glacial landscape.

Snow commonly covers the Bear Lake trail from late October into early June. Traction devices help on packed snow and ice, and winter access takes more planning because the shuttle is not running.
