Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake is a high alpine lake tucked beneath steep peaks in a glacier-shaped basin in Rocky Mountain National Park. The popular Bear Lake route climbs 1.8 miles with 605 feet of gain to reach it. Go for the full mountain setting; turn around at Dream Lake if you want a shorter outing.

The route passes Nymph Lake at 0.5 mile and Dream Lake at 1.1 miles before reaching Emerald. The footing gets rocky, with stone steps on the uphill trail. Emerald adds about 0.7 mile and 180 feet of ascent beyond Dream Lake; the same distance returns you along the trail. At the end, the lake sits beneath a steep rocky cirque, with mountain walls closing around most of the shore.

Bear Lake is the trailhead and parking area, at 9,475 feet. The lot often fills by 9 a.m. year-round, so arrive early or use the free summer shuttle from Park & Ride. If the corridor is full or crowded, keep another park area in mind and come back later. A pit toilet is reported at the parking area; the water source there has not been identified as potable. There is no food service at the lake.

Snow and ice can affect the high trail in colder months, and spring reports describe muddy, slippery sections. Mountain weather changes quickly with elevation, so check current conditions before setting out.

Glaciers widened older V-shaped stream valleys into U-shaped valleys, leaving lakes, moraines and steep cirques across this part of the park. That carved, enclosed setting is what makes the Emerald Lake basin feel like a bowl beneath the peaks.

From the shore, include the water and the rocky cirque behind it to show how enclosed the basin is. When runoff is flowing, small streams can cascade down the slopes into the lake. The lake can freeze in colder seasons, changing the view from open water to snow and ice.
