Overview

Tucked between the Bear Lake and Fern Lake corridors, Odessa Lake rewards the extra effort with big-mountain drama—sheer cliffs, a classic subalpine shoreline, and Little Matterhorn rising above the water. It’s a favorite add‑on past Fern Lake and often feels calmer than the crowds closer to the trailheads.

How to Get There

From Bear Lake: About 8.6–8.9 miles round-trip with roughly 1,900–1,991 ft of gain. Expect steep ups, a boulder field, and an avalanche chute, plus a steep 600–800 ft drop to the lake—remember you’ll climb back out. Scenic variants pass Lake Helene and Two Rivers Lake.
From Fern Lake Trailhead: About 9.2–9.6 miles round-trip with ~1,890–1,978 ft of gain. The grade stays friendly to The Pool, then steepens past Fern Falls and through burn-scar sections with little shade. From Fern to Odessa, it gets rockier, crosses a large rockslide, then eases along a creek into the basin.
Logistics: Parking at both Bear Lake and Fern Lake fills early in season; use the park shuttle when available. Timed-entry/road reservations are required in peak months.

What You’ll See

Odessa’s setting is the payoff—jagged peaks and cliffs ringing a clear, high-elevation lake. Approaching from Bear Lake delivers an especially dramatic reveal. You can spot Grace Falls in the distance, and the smaller shoreline keeps things intimate. Many hikers consider the mile and ~500 ft beyond Fern Lake well worth it for these views.

Trail Character and Conditions

Expect moderate-to-hard effort due to length, altitude, and sustained grades. Sections are rocky, with a notable rockslide crossing between Fern and Odessa. Burn-scar and beetle-kill areas mean limited shade—bring sun protection and extra water. Weather shifts quickly near 10,000 ft; start early to beat afternoon storms.

Seasons

Snow and ice can linger into early summer; in winter, prepared hikers may need microspikes or snowshoes. The Fern Lake trailhead isn’t plowed in winter—alternate parking about 0.5 mile away typically has room for ~20 cars and a pit toilet. Year-round, start early for cooler temps and easier parking.

Wildlife and Angling

You may see elk in Moraine Park and other corridor wildlife (even wild turkeys have been spotted). Trout are present in the creek along the approach, with reports of mostly small brook trout—know and follow park fishing regulations.

Geology Snapshot

The landscape here is a window into Rocky’s deep time: ancient metamorphic and granitic rocks sculpted by multiple glacial periods. Glaciers carved U-shaped valleys, cirques, and left moraines—Odessa’s basin showcases that glacial handiwork.

Regulations and Backcountry Etiquette

There are no services at Odessa Lake—no restrooms or potable water. If camping on a permitted trip, campfires are prohibited. From April 1 to October 31, use a bear-resistant food canister. Dispose of all washing and cooking wastewater at least 200 feet from camps and water sources, and leave natural objects where you find them. Dogs are not allowed in the park.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for an early start to secure parking, catch calmer weather, and enjoy quieter shores at the lake. Weekdays see fewer people. In shoulder seasons, carry traction if conditions warrant.
