Bonnie Vale Beach

Overview

Bonnie Vale Beach is the park’s mellow, family‑friendly bay: a sandy edge and sand spit with broad grassy space behind it, perfect for an unhurried swim, paddle and picnic. The water is typically shallow and calm, so it feels more like a natural pool than surf beach.

What You’ll Do

• Swim, splash and wade far out on the shallow sand – great for beginners and non‑swimmers.
• Spread out on the grass for a lazy picnic and fire up the free gas/electric barbecues.
• Hire kayaks in nearby Bundeena on weekends and explore the quiet bay.
• Stretch your legs on local walking tracks; sections of The Coast track are within easy reach from Bundeena.

Facilities

Day‑use facilities beside the beach include flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, free gas/electric BBQs and a carpark. The adjacent Bonnie Vale campground offers a more built‑up stay (mix of powered/unpowered sites; hot showers and drinking water), though camping requires a booking and is separate from day‑use.

Getting There

Drive via Audley and Sir Bertram Stevens Drive, then Bundeena Drive; turn left into Sea Breeze Lane and follow signs. Roads are sealed and fine for 2WD. Car‑free is simple: train to Cronulla, walk to the ferry, then a short stroll (about 15 minutes) from Bundeena wharf to the beach.

Rules & Safety

Beaches here aren’t patrolled; swim to your ability and keep an eye on conditions. Park rules apply: no pets, no wood or camp fires, no drones, and smoking is banned. Mobile reception can be patchy.

Fees & Hours

Royal National Park entry is $12 per vehicle per day. Typical opening hours are 7:00am–8:30pm, with occasional closures in poor weather or high fire danger.

Best Time to Visit

Summer is the sweet spot for swimming; spring adds wildflowers. Weekends and holidays get busiest, especially from midday into the afternoon; mornings are noticeably quieter. If you’re coming on a summer weekend, arrive early or take the ferry to skip parking stress. Expect visits to run anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours.
