Wedding Cake Rock Track

The walk starts at the Beachcomber Avenue gate, where a short access stretch meets the signed Coast Track. The first inland section is less scenic than what follows; keep going until the route opens into coastal heath. Long boardwalk sections cross the scrub, with the ocean appearing alongside the trail. The Balconies is an early viewpoint over broken sandstone cliffs and surf, so the walk gives you several good stops before the rock.

Much of the middle section rises and falls gently over sandstone and boardwalk. At Waterrun, steps drop to a low point before several flights climb back up. This is the main concentrated effort. Watch your footing on the rocky stretches and leave a little energy for the return, which repeats the same ups and downs. The route is often rough and steep enough that sturdy shoes make a real difference.

At the end, the lookout faces the pale, sharply layered sandstone that gives Wedding Cake Rock its name. Iron has leached from the stone, leaving it unusually light and fragile; cracks can spread and sections can collapse. The fence is there because the formation is unstable. Stay behind it and do not step onto the rock. From the safe side, frame the pale layers against the darker coast and water for a better sense of its shape and height.

Coastal heath and sea views continue through most of the walk. Spring brings wildflowers, and swamp wallabies and birds may be seen along the track. Humpback whales migrate along this coast seasonally, so scan the water if you are walking during migration, but treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a promise. There is no food along the route.
