Overview
Deeban Spit is a long, tidal sandbar at the mouth of Port Hacking, opposite Bundeena. It feels wild and elemental—more sand and sky than classic beach—shaped constantly by tides, waves, and the river. Think gentle water, big estuary views, and plenty of room to wander.
Getting There & Access
Reach it from Bonnie Vale Beach in Bundeena on an easy, mostly flat 4 km return walk (about an hour) across sand. Since May 2020 the spit has been “split,” so plan around low tide; at higher tides you may need to wade. Channels can shift over time, so give yourself margin and avoid pushing timings tight to the turn of the tide.
Facilities & Nearby Services
Treat the spit as unserviced. There are no toilets or water on the sandbar (or on Jibbon Beach). Stock up in Bundeena, which has shops, cafes, and mobile reception. Public toilets are near the ferry carpark opposite the shops. Beaches here are unpatrolled, so come prepared and carry all your drinking water.
Wildlife & Why It’s Special
This is prime shorebird country. Migratory species such as far eastern curlew and bar-tailed godwit use the flats, and resident birds like pied oystercatchers and masked lapwings nest right on the sand. Eggs are extremely well camouflaged—walk close to the waterline, heed any temporary fencing, and give feeding or nesting birds plenty of space.
Culture & Care for Country
The estuary and surrounding lands are Dharawal (Tharawal) Country, including the Gweagal people. Nearby Jibbon Head holds significant Aboriginal rock engravings, now viewed from a protective platform. You’ll also encounter shell middens across the district—treat all cultural sites as protected and leave every shell where it lies.
Navigation Notes
NPWS recommends using a proper topographic map if you leave formed routes. For the spit and adjacent flats, tide awareness matters far more than distance—channels deepen and move.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for a weekday low tide to keep the crossing easy and avoid Bundeena’s busier parking periods. Early or late in the day is typically calmer on the flats and kinder for wildlife; always prioritize low tide timing over everything else.
