Elkwallow Picnic Area

Overview

Elkwallow is the North District’s go-to picnic stop: a leafy loop just off Skyline Drive with scattered tables, grills, and an easy in-and-out parking layout. You’re here for a mellow, shaded lunch spot that also sets you up nicely for a quick walk or a bigger hike.

Why It’s Special

Few picnic grounds sit right beside a wayside. Elkwallow Wayside is steps away, so you can grab snacks, hot food, or last-minute essentials without leaving the area. It’s also a natural gateway to trails—this is a convenient place to hop on the Appalachian Trail or head toward the Knob Mountain–Jeremy’s Run network. That stream corridor is called out by the park as especially scenic.

What to Expect

• Forested, mostly quiet tables spread up and down gentle slopes, some tucked into woods, others in small openings.
• Charcoal grills/fire rings at many sites and ample parking around a paved loop.
• Restrooms: a pit toilet in the picnic area; full-service restrooms at the nearby wayside. Park guidance notes picnic-ground restrooms are available in warmer months, so the wayside is your reliable backup.

Wildlife

You’ll often see white-tailed deer and hear plenty of songbirds; wild turkeys aren’t unusual. Black bears do pass through, which is why the park stresses keeping food within arm’s reach and cleaning up immediately. Use the provided trash/recycling and never leave food unattended.

Make It a Mini-Adventure

Pair your picnic with a short stroll on the AT right from the Elkwallow area, or sample part of the Knob Mountain–Jeremy’s Run route to catch that photogenic stream before looping back for ice cream or a burger at the wayside.

Best Time to Visit

• Timing: Aim for late morning on weekdays or late afternoon any day to sidestep the lunch rush; weekends and peak fall color draw crowds.
• Seasons: Spring and fall are comfortable and pretty; summer is lush but buggy—bring repellent.
• Light: Dappled forest shade most of the day; not a grand-vista spot, so come for ambiance, not sunset views.
