Rattlesnake Point Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at 3,105 feet, looking south across a small meadow to the Blue Ridge. It makes sense as a quick pause if you want a mountain view without a hike. The distant ridges are the draw, so save it for clear air; low cloud or haze can flatten the view.
Scan left to right for Jenkins Mountain, Pignut Mountain, Oventop Mountain, Old Rag, Marys Rock and Stony Man Mountain. Old Rag sits farthest away and can be hard to pick out unless the air is clear. For a photo, leave the meadow in the foreground and keep a few ridgelines in frame; aiming only at the skyline loses the depth.
At the north end, the roadcut exposes fine vesicular basalt: lava rock with tiny holes left by gas bubbles as it cooled. It’s a quick piece of geology on the same roadside stop.
