Overview
A classic Skyline Drive stop, Rattlesnake Point Overlook is an official roadside viewpoint around milepost 21 with an elevated perch at 3,105 feet. It’s a simple pullout with a stone-wall edge and broad, layered mountain-and-valley scenery—easy to reach, easy to love.
What You'll See
Expect wide Blue Ridge vistas and a deep valley drop, with ridgelines stacking into the distance. On certain mornings you can catch a cloud inversion that makes nearby peaks look like islands in a white sea—worth pulling over for if you spot it forming along the drive.
Why Go
This one is underrated. It’s smaller and typically less busy than the park’s headline overlooks, which means you actually get the view (and a photo) without the scrum. If you’re hopscotching overlooks in the park’s north district, put this on your short list.
Logistics
It’s a straightforward drive-up pullout on Skyline Drive with a few parking spots. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables. For facilities, use Matthews Arm Campground or Elkwallow Wayside when they’re open.
Wildlife
Keep your eyes up for raptors riding thermals and the usual deer traffic at dawn and dusk. Timber rattlesnakes live in the park but are rarely seen—watch where you step if you wander near rock edges.
Photography
Sunset light works beautifully here, giving those ridgelines definition. A tripod is easy to set on the paved edge, and a short telephoto compresses the layers for that classic Blue Ridge look.
