Perched at mile 88.6 on Skyline Drive (about 2,575–2,580 feet), Horsehead Mountain Overlook dishes out a sweeping window into the Shenandoah Valley, specifically Augusta County. It’s an easy, pull-right-in stop—great when you want a rewarding view without a hike—and it usually flies under the radar compared to the park’s marquee overlooks.

What You’ll See

Look northwest over rolling farmland and forested ridges. The unique angle here peers into Paine Run hollow, framed by Trayfoot Mountain to the right and Rocks Mountain to the left. If trees are nudging into the view, walk to the north end of the pullout; that’s where the sightline opens up best.

On-site Touches

You’ll find interpretive signage that adds context about the landscape and local history. Beyond that, this is a straightforward masonry-walled overlook with a paved pullout—no frills, just the view.

Wildlife

While sightings aren’t guaranteed, the overlook’s valley-facing perch makes it a decent place to scan for raptors riding thermals. Typical park wildlife—white‑tailed deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, and the occasional black bear—can be around.

Practicalities

There’s no restroom, water, or picnic setup here, and parking is simply the roadside pullout. In peak foliage season or on busy weekends, spaces can fill. Weather shifts fast at this elevation and can shroud the view—or even close Skyline Drive—so check conditions.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise and sunset deliver the most flattering light across Augusta County and Paine Run. Early or late in the day also helps with crowds and heat. Clear, breezy days offer the crispest long-range views; bring a jacket and a camera or binoculars.
