Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock is the payoff view on Shenandoah’s Riprap Trail—a rugged outcrop with big, open vistas over the Shenandoah Valley. It feels wild and a bit off the radar compared to the park’s marquee overlooks, which is a big part of the appeal.

The Hike

Start at the Riprap Parking Area around mile 90 on Skyline Drive. Follow the Appalachian Trail briefly, then turn left onto the blue‑blazed Riprap Trail. You’ll pass the quirky Calvary Rocks formations before reaching the Chimney Rock viewpoint. It’s about 3.4 miles round trip with roughly 830 feet of elevation gain—moderate overall but expect rocky, sometimes steep stretches.

Scenery & Geology

This route is all about rock and sky. Calvary Rocks offers a fun warm‑up, and Chimney Rock itself stands across a gorge as a distinct, photogenic outcrop with ample room to sit for a snack. The area has burned in past wildfires, and the regenerating landscape now frames the views with seasonal wildflowers and fresh mountain laurel growth.

Wildlife & Seasons

You’re in classic Shenandoah habitat, so keep an eye out for birds, deer, and other small wildlife along the trail. Spring brings the best wildflower show; leaf‑off seasons expand the views and make the rock features pop.

What To Know

There are no facilities on this hike—no water, restrooms, or picnic tables at the trailhead or viewpoint. The trail can be hot and exposed in places due to the recovering forest, so bring sun protection and plenty of water. Dogs are allowed on leash (6 feet).

Best Time to Visit

Weekdays see fewer hikers than weekends, and sunrise or late‑day light makes the rock and valley views sing. If you stay for sunset, pack a headlamp for the hike back. Spring and fall are standouts—spring for blooms, fall for color—while winter delivers the widest panoramas when leaves are down.
