Blackrock Summit

Blackrock Summit is a rocky knob, or tor, in Shenandoah’s South District, where a wide field of broken stone spills down the mountainside above the Shenandoah Valley. It’s one of the park’s best short walks: the loop is about a mile with 175 feet of climbing, and the boulder field makes the payoff feel bigger than the effort. You can enjoy the views without scrambling over the rocks; climb only if you’re comfortable with uneven footing.

From the Blackrock parking area, the route follows the Appalachian Trail south, then turns at a trail post toward the boulder field. The loop circles the slope and returns on the Blackrock Hut Road-Trayfoot Mountain Trail. Plan on about 45 minutes. The loop itself is relatively easy, but that changes if you climb among the summit blocks. Gaps and uneven slabs make careful foot placement important, and scrambling back down takes attention too.

The open summit gives you a wide look across the Shenandoah Valley toward Massanutten Mountain and the ridges beyond. Walk around the boulder field for views without climbing to its highest rocks; scrambling higher opens the panorama further. For a photo, keep a few angular blocks in the foreground so the valley and long mountain layers have a sense of scale.

Blackrock is an isolated tor left standing above slopes covered in broken blocks. The summit exposes quartz sandstone from the Harpers Formation. Its rock layers tilt gently northwest, while fractures cut across them and split the stone into slabs and gaps. Some isolated columns stand 10 to 26 feet high, and a slope of loose blocks runs more than 1,600 feet down the west side.

The Harpers Formation began as sand deposited in an ancient marine setting, then hardened into resistant rock. Geologists think cold-climate processes helped move Blackrock’s loose blocks downhill, though the exact process and timing remain uncertain. Measurements of three exposed surfaces estimated erosion at about 59 feet per million years, nearly 33 feet per million years faster than eight other Shenandoah summit sites measured for comparison.

The loop starts at the Blackrock parking area on Skyline Drive, inside the park’s entrance-fee area. The lot is small and can be busy, so an early start may make parking and the walk quieter. The trail does not meet ADA guidelines. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet, though scrambling may be awkward for them. Farther south, Dundo Picnic Grounds has a vault toilet but no water. Blackrock is also a TRACK Trail, with a children’s activity brochure and an interpretive sign.
