Pullover-simple and view-forward, Trayfoot Mountain Overlook sits around milepost 86.5 on Skyline Drive between Blackrock Summit parking and Blackrock Gap. At roughly 2,575 feet, it opens to a sweeping, south-facing panorama with long looks across the Blue Ridge.

What You'll See

Expect a broad, 180-ish degree vista with Cedar and Pasture Fence Mountains anchoring the distance. The overlook isn’t on Trayfoot’s summit—the mountain is off to the right across Skyline Drive—but you’ll still get that big, layered ridge-and-valley drama. Note the solitary dead oak that many people end up photographing—it adds character, but it can block part of the sightline.

Why Stop Here

It’s an easy, high-reward pullout with light that plays nicely at both ends of the day. If you’re hopping between viewpoints in the South District or pairing a quick stop with a Blackrock Summit hike, this one is a convenient add-on.

Wildlife

Keep binoculars handy. Raptors like to perch on that lone tree, and roadside sightings of deer and wild turkey are common along this stretch. Black bears do roam the area, though glimpses are hit-or-miss.

This is a straightforward overlook: no restrooms, water, or tables. Parking is just the roadside bay, so it’s first-come during peak foliage weekends. Fog can roll in fast and wipe out the view—mountain weather changes quickly.
