Trail Access

The Appalachian Trail crosses Skyline Drive at Pinefield Gap. There isn’t safe parking at the exact crossing, but there’s a graveled pull-off at a service road about a hundred yards south—use that if you’re hopping on the AT or heading to Pinefield Hut.

Geology Note

Along this stretch approaching the gap, you can spot rock with thin, fibrous asbestos-bearing sheets—a distinctive local geologic feature of the ancient Blue Ridge.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and soaring hawks. Black bears live in the area (sightings are possible), and in warm months mosquitoes and ticks can be active.

This is a simple overlook: no restrooms, water, or tables, and cell service can be spotty. Parking is limited and shared by sightseers and hikers. For facilities, head to nearby developed areas like Loft Mountain.

Sunset brings the most flattering light for the view. Early mornings are your best bet for solitude and wildlife activity. Weekdays are calmer than peak leaf-season weekends.
