Ivy Creek Overlook

Overview

Perched at mile 77.5 on Skyline Drive (elev. ~2,890 ft), Ivy Creek Overlook is an easy pull-off with an outsized view. It faces east toward rolling Blue Ridge ridgelines—Weaver Mountain frames the left, Loft Mountain the right, with Flattop Mountain centered—so the morning light is gorgeous here. It’s usually quieter than the headliner overlooks, especially outside peak foliage season.

Why it’s worth a stop

The Appalachian Trail literally crosses the paved overlook, so you get a stellar view, a legit AT moment, and a handy jumping-off point for a leg-stretcher. There’s an interpretive placard about the AT, and the rocky outcrops make a simple but satisfying photo perch.

Short hikes from the overlook

Step onto the AT for a 2.8-mile out-and-back that dips toward Ivy Creek and strings together additional forest scenes and occasional peeks. Expect some rocky, uneven tread in spots. In spring and early summer, the corridor here can be loaded with wildflowers, and bird activity is lively. Deer are frequently spotted in the misty hours.

What to expect (and not)

This is a classic Skyline Drive stop: pullout, parking, big view. That’s it. No restrooms, no picnic tables, no water. In summer, foliage can partially soften the vista; walking a minute or two onto the AT can improve sightlines.

Best time to visit

• Sunrise: The overlook faces east, so dawn delivers the best color and soft side-light on the ridges.
• Weekdays or early: Midday sees the most drive-by traffic; early morning and late afternoon are calmer.
• Seasons: Fall foliage is spectacular (and busier). Leaf-off months (late fall–winter) open up the most expansive views.

Photography tips

Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to catch the pre-dawn glow. A short stroll onto the AT helps frame layered ridges without foreground brush. Late-day light can be harsh and backlit here; mornings win.
