Brown Mountain Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at mile 76.9 in Shenandoah's southern section. It opens onto a broad north-to-south view across the Blue Ridge and the Big Run drainage. This is a quick roadside stop; Brown Mountain Trail starts here for a longer walk to open ledges.
Southward, look for Trayfoot Mountain and Rockytop, with Big Run below and Rocky Mountain nearby. Turn north toward Two Mile Ridge and Rocky Mount, with Shenandoah Valley farther out. A wide horizontal photo can hold several layers of ridges; keeping the shadowed drainage near the bottom helps show their scale.
Brown Mountain Trail leaves the overlook, drops from Skyline Drive, then climbs toward quartzite ledges above Big Run. The open ledges are roughly 2.2 miles each way, with moderately steep sections. Turn around at the ledges if you want the trail's main view without continuing farther.
A roadcut near this milepost exposes folded Hampton Formation rock: fine-grained metasandstone, phyllite and coarser quartzite, dipping west. It gives the stop a geology detail to look for beyond the distant panorama.
