Two Mile Run Overlook

Overview

A compact Skyline Drive stop at milepost ~76 (elevation 2,770 ft), Two Mile Run Overlook faces west–northwest with a big look at Two Mile Ridge and the striking white quartzite cliffs of Rocky Mountain. It’s quieter than the headliner overlooks, but that’s part of its charm.

What You’ll See

• Geology front and center: twin tiers of bright quartzite cliffs (Erwin Formation) curving along Rocky Mountain.
• A living lesson in fire ecology: the 2016 Rocky Mount fire burned through this area; you can see ongoing forest recovery.
• Broad valley-and-ridge scenery that pops in clear afternoon light and fall color.

Trails and Connections

The Appalachian Trail runs directly through the overlook—no spur needed. It’s 1.6 miles north to Pinefield Gap and 4.9 miles south to Loft Mountain Campstore. This pullout also works as parking for nearby routes into the Big Run/Rocky Mount area.

Why Stop Here Instead of Other Overlooks

It’s a geologist’s-eye view (those white cliffs are distinctive) and a rare window into post-fire regrowth. If you like pairing a quick vista with an immediate AT ramble, this one’s a no-brainer.

Best Time to Visit

• Light: Late afternoon and golden hour suit the west–northwest view and make the quartzite glow.
• Season: Autumn foliage is especially photogenic here.
• Crowds: Often calmer than the famous stops; still, the tiny lot fills on sunny weekends.

Practical Notes

There are no restrooms, water, or tables—just a paved pullout, stone wall, and the view. Skyline Drive can close in bad weather; check conditions before you go.
