Guide
Two Mile Run Overlook is a roadside pull-off at mile 76.2, about 2,770 feet above sea level, with a west-northwest view over forested ridges. It is a worthwhile short stop for the landscape and its fire story. The parking area is small, and fog or haze can obscure the view. Skyline Drive can also close during bad weather.
The overlook interprets the April 2016 Rocky Mount fire, which spread quickly in dry conditions and high winds. The National Park Service believes people caused it. Fire is also a natural part of the park’s ecology: it can clear fast-growing understory and help native oaks and Table Mountain pine.
Across Two Mile Ridge, two tiers of white Erwin Formation quartzite cut through the forest. Their curved outlines record deep crustal folding during mountain building. Face west-northwest toward the ridge; the pale cliffs are easier to pick out after the leaves fall, though haze can soften the view.
