South River Picnic Area

Overview

A roomy, wooded picnic ground around mile 62.7–62.8 on Skyline Drive, South River Picnic Area is the low‑key spot you stop for lunch and end up staying longer. It’s quiet, shady, and doubles as the main trailhead for the blue‑blazed South River Falls Trail.

What Makes It Stand Out

• It’s essentially the front door to South River Falls, one of the park’s signature waterfall hikes. The trail starts just below the comfort station.
• Compared to some busier picnic grounds, this one feels tucked away and calm, with tables spread out under the trees.

• Drinking water available spring through fall; taps are shut off in winter.

• Appalachian Trail connections nearby make it easy to turn a picnic into a longer walk. Some hikers link this area with Lewis Mountain Picnic Grounds via the AT (signage is clearer at the South River end than at Lewis Mountain).

Wildlife & Birding

Expect classic Shenandoah woodland company: songbirds in the canopy and the occasional deer or chipmunk nosing around. Bears do pass through—store food properly and follow posted guidance.

Best Time to Visit

• Spring–fall are easiest thanks to running water at the spigots; winter visits are fine if you bring your own water.
• Weekdays or early mornings are reliably mellow. Autumn weekends can see parking and tables fill due to foliage traffic.

• Charcoal only in the grills; no open fires.
• Basic facilities: vault toilets and seasonal water. Plan accordingly.
• Combine your picnic with the falls hike if you have a couple of hours—it's the reason many people stop here.
