South River Overlook

Overview

A classic Skyline Drive pull-off around mile 62.5–62.7, South River Overlook serves up an easy, rewarding valley vista without lacing up hiking boots. It’s a small, signed stop with its own parking, ideal for quick photos or a leg stretch between longer adventures.

What You'll See

Expect a broad sweep of the South River Valley—rolling, forested ridges and a layered horizon that really shines in the right light. Fall color makes this overlook pop, and golden-hour light (sunrise and late afternoon) tends to be the most flattering for photos.

Pair It With

Just up the road, the South River Picnic Grounds anchor the blue-blazed trail to the South River Falls Observation Point, a stone-walled viewpoint of an 83-foot waterfall. The trail starts just below the picnic area’s comfort station and includes a stream crossing. It’s a separate stop from the overlook but close enough to bundle into the same outing.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for raptors, vultures, and songbirds riding valley thermals, especially early and late in the day. The surrounding forest is lively; deer and smaller mammals are often spotted in the broader South River corridor.

Practical Notes

This is a simple overlook—no restrooms, tables, or water here. For amenities, head to the South River Picnic Grounds nearby. Parking is limited and meant for short stops. Visibility can drop fast in fog or low clouds, which is common in the mountains.

• Sunrise or late afternoon for softer light and fewer people.
• Peak foliage (typically autumn) brings the most color and the most cars—swing by early on weekends.
• Clear days are best; if clouds sit low, save this stop for later in your drive.
