South River Falls is an 83-foot waterfall reached from South River Picnic Grounds on Skyline Drive. The shorter circuit is listed at 3.3 miles with 910 feet of climbing; the full visit to the waterfall’s base is described as about 5.1 miles with 1,299 feet of gain. If getting down to the water is the point, plan for the longer route and extra time. This is a real hike, not a roadside stop: the trail drops into a wooded hollow, then climbs back out.

The blue-blazed South River Falls Trail reaches a stone-walled observation point above the falls. That is a worthwhile view, but it is not the close-up. Continue downhill on the falls trail at the marked junction instead of turning onto the yellow-blazed return road. The base route is an extra descent, and it is easy to stop too soon.
After reaching the falls’ base, retrace the spur to South River Falls Road and the fire road, then follow the Appalachian Trail back to the falls-trail junction. The loop includes a stream crossing and finishes uphill. The fire-road return avoids climbing straight back up the steep descent, though you still have a sustained climb to the picnic grounds.
Late spring and early summer are especially interesting for birders. Breeding warblers here include cerulean, Blackburnian, and black-throated blue warblers, along with northern parula, Louisiana waterthrush, and American redstart. Swallowtails and great spangled fritillaries are among the butterflies recorded in the area; sightings depend on season and luck.
The stone-walled overlook gives you the waterfall in its forested setting; at the base, the streamside rocks bring you much closer. For a phone photo, keep a little creek or rock ledge in the foreground at the base so the falling water has scale. The overlook is the easier shot; the close view takes the extra descent.
The trailhead is just below the comfort station at Skyline Drive mile 62.7. The picnic grounds provide access parking and restrooms. A park entrance fee applies; no separate activity fee or reservation is required. Dogs may accompany you on a leash no longer than six feet. The trail is not ADA-accessible, so bring water and food for the hike.
