Peterson Road Beach

Overview

Tucked at the end of Peterson Road, this is one of the park’s most peaceful Lake Michigan beaches. Expect a natural, undeveloped shoreline with big-sky views toward Empire Bluffs and Platte Point, and on clear days you may glimpse South Manitou Island. It’s the kind of place you come to hear waves, not people.

Getting There & What to Expect

From the small crushed-gravel lot, a roughly 600-foot path of deep, soft sand crosses steep foredunes to the beach. There’s a vault toilet at the parking area, but no running water, boat ramp, or services—pack in what you need and plan to pack it out.

Why It’s Special

This stretch feels quieter than many other access points thanks to its small lot and low-key vibe. The views are classic Lakeshore—dunes at your back, a broad horizon out front, and long, uninterrupted shoreline.

Wildlife & Protection

Piping plovers, a threatened shorebird, nest here in spring and early summer. Areas may be roped off to protect nests; give these tiny birds lots of space and follow all posted closures. Pets aren’t allowed here because of the plover habitat.

Swimming & Safety

Swimming is allowed along the Lakeshore, but there are no lifeguards. Lake Michigan can produce rip currents and stays colder than most expect. Check conditions, keep a close eye on kids, and know your limits.

Fires

Beach fires are permitted only on mainland Lake Michigan beaches between the water’s edge and the first dune. If you have a fire, fully douse it with water before you leave and never bury embers—they can burn bare feet.

Best Time to Visit

Hot summer afternoons suit the laid‑back, hideaway feel here. On peak days, the small lot can fill; arriving earlier helps. Photographers will appreciate clear days for long views and clean horizons.
