Overview

A big, wooded campground in the park’s southern district, Platte River Campground puts you within walking distance of the Platte River and less than two miles from Lake Michigan. It’s the spot if you want river time, beach time, and a comfortable base without leaving the park.

Campsites & Amenities

Expect multiple loops with a mix of electric and non-electric sites, pull-throughs and back-ins for RVs, standard tent sites, walk-in tent sites, and hike-in group areas. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring. Restroom buildings have flush toilets, running water, hot showers, and camp sinks for dishwashing when the water system is on; in winter the park switches to vault toilets and showers are unavailable. You’ll find potable water spigots throughout, plus a dump/fill station near the entrance.

What Makes It Stand Out

The river-and-lakeshore combo is the draw: stroll to the Platte River for an easy paddle or float, then head a short drive or bike to Lake Michigan for wide beaches and sunsets. For day trips, you’re well placed for the Dune Climb and nearby coastal towns.

Wildlife

You’re camping in mixed forest and wetlands—think deer browsing at dawn, busy chipmunks and squirrels, and plenty of birds and waterfowl along the river and shoreline. Store food and scented items properly; standard park rules are enforced to keep wildlife wild.

Reservations, Season, and Rules

This campground is popular and books up early in summer. During the main season, sites require advance reservations. A park entrance pass is required in addition to camping fees; federal interagency passes are honored. Group sites are hike-in, tent-only, and do not allow pets or RVs. Quiet hours and standard park regulations apply.

River & Beach Time

The Platte River is made for casual tubing, paddling, and wading on warm days. Lake Michigan’s beaches are close by for swimming and sunset strolls. Expect sandy soils and shady sites under pines—great for hammocks and afternoon naps.

Best Time to Visit

Summer brings the warmest water and the biggest crowds; aim for weekdays and arrive early for beach parking and shower time.
Spring and fall deliver calmer camp loops, crisp air, and excellent hiking light in the morning and late afternoon.
Winter camping is open and quiet; plan for vault toilets and no showers when the water system is off.
