The house sits uphill from the interpretive center; visitors can walk between the buildings or drive to the upper parking area. Ramps lead into both buildings, but the site does not describe the connecting route, so contact staff if you need an accessibility plan. The house closes from October through April, while the interpretive center follows a separate schedule. Check current access before setting out. Restrooms are available during operating hours, with limited ADA access. The bluff setting makes a wide exterior photo useful: keep the house in frame with the rolling landscape around Medora rather than cropping down to the facade.

“If you see a coyote spring into the air and land in the grass, it may be hunting a mouse. Coyotes use their sharp hearing to locate small rodents, then pounce on them.”

Chateau de Mores State Historic Site centers on a 26-room, two-story frame summer home built in 1883 on a bluff above Medora. Today the house is a historic museum, paired with a separate interpretive center. It is a worthwhile stop if you want the story behind Medora and the family's short-lived business venture: start at the center for its permanent exhibit and orientation film, then visit the house.

The exhibit, Rails, Ranching and Riches: The Marquis de Mores in Dakota, puts the house in the context of the Marquis's cattle and meatpacking plans. It includes a scale refrigerator car and the original Deadwood stagecoach from his stage line. The brief film introduces the house and the family's ambitions, so you have the wider story before you step into the rooms.

Many of the house's furnishings and personal effects are original. Take time with the rooms and the objects that make this feel like a family home rather than an empty historic shell. When an interpreter is available, ask about how the family used the house and what you are seeing.

Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores, came to Dakota Territory in 1883 to process range cattle in Medora and send dressed meat east in refrigerated rail cars. The business plan collapsed in 1886. The refrigerator-car model and stagecoach at the center make that ambitious operation easier to picture than a timeline alone.

The town named for MedoraThe Marquis named the new town for his wife.

The Marquis named the new town for his wife. During the family's three active years, Medora gained houses, businesses, and a Catholic church that she had built. The Chateau gives the town's western history a personal scale: one family's summer home sits above the place where its larger plans played out.
