Tucked into a lava field south of the Laki crater row, Blágil is a simple, highland campground with an adjacent mountain hut. It’s summer-only and purpose-built for people who want that raw, big-sky solitude right in the heart of the Lakagígar area—without the frills.
Facilities & What to Expect
The campsite has cold water taps and basic toilets, plus hot showers for a small fee. Next door, the hut offers sleeping-bag bunks (16 beds in a single common room), cooking facilities, flush toilets and hot showers. There’s no electricity and no shop, so bring everything you need. A small horse paddock sits on site, and dogs are allowed on leash.
Typical fees noted for the campsite are around 2,800 ISK per adult, with a 500 ISK shower fee and a 500 ISK facility fee; children up to 16 camp free. Hut prices have been listed around 5,900 ISK per adult, with discounts for seniors and youths. Always confirm current rates and availability through the Skaftárstofa Visitor Centre.
Getting There
Access is an adventure: you’ll come in on F-roads (F206/F207) with multiple unbridged river crossings—high-clearance 4×4 only. Conditions can change quickly with rain and melt, so check the latest road and river status with rangers at Skaftárstofa before you leave. Never attempt a crossing you’re unsure about.
Why Go
This is a stellar base for exploring Laki’s otherworldly volcanic ridges and moss-covered lava flows. Trails and scenic walks in the area make it easy to immerse yourself in the aftermath of the 1783 eruption that shaped this landscape. In summer, park staff lead educational hikes in the wider Laki area, making Blágil a convenient overnight if you want to linger.

Blágil operates roughly June–September, tied to the opening of the F-roads. Reserve the hut via Skaftárstofa; the campsite usually doesn’t require advance booking, but expect basic services and limited capacity.
Best Time to Visit
Summer is the only window. Weekdays see very light crowds compared to Iceland’s ring-road campgrounds. Start your day by checking in with Skaftárstofa for road, river and weather updates, then head in with ample time and margin for changing conditions.
